Week 4 Movie Angles
The Benchwarmers (2006)
I chose The Benchwarmers because it is one of my favorite movies that is full of comedy and is, in my opinion, a go-to movie.
The first shot that I decided to comment on was during the first third of the movie and takes place while the Benchwarmers were challenged to a game of hot potato. The characters during this time were trying to improve there ability to play baseball. This shot is not quite a choker but instead a low angle shot that shows Clark holding the hot potato. This shot shows a realization on Clark's face and gives the audience a bit of humor. Clark had no idea what "hot potato" was and so he was extremely confused when an intense pain came rushing to his hand. This shot also gives you an idea of the intelligence behind this particular character, which becomes especially obvious after this scene.
The next shot I chose to discuss is a full shot that includes the full body of the main characters Clark (left), Gus (middle), and Richie (right). This shot gives you an idea of who the main characters are and their knowledge on the game of baseball. The audience can clearly see that Clark has no idea what he is doing as he is wearing a helmet and knee pads, Gus looks like he actually knows what he is doing, and Richie looks like he is just following behind the role of Gus. This shot also gives an idea of the characters surrounding as they are at a baseball field about to play as a team of three.
This shot takes place towards the later parts of the film as the main characters started a fundraiser to build a stadium for them to play in. This shot is an extreme long shot of that stadium fully built that shows the final product. Before this shot, the stadium was shown being built and the beginning stages of its creation. This final shot showing the final product gives the audience some closure to the stadium before the most important game is played by the Benchwarmers. The Benchwarmers were then supposed to play in this game as they were going against their rivals, a little league team. Instead, the Benchwarmers allowed a group of kids to take their spot and enjoy the game and field themselves.
The next shot is very wide shot that consists of the Benchwarmers and former leaguer, Reggie Jackson, smashing mailboxes as a method of practice. Reggie Jackson was trying to teach mainly Clark and Richie how to hit and he came up with the brilliant idea of smashing street side mailboxes. This shot shows Gus gearing up to hit a mailbox as the car is flying down a street. The shot had the intention of being very humorous and it shows the characters' stupidity as they drive up and down the street hitting mailboxes. By using this shot, the amount of fun the characters are having are displayed and there so is a key aspect of baseball.
The final shot I decided to discuss was a close up that shows the foot of a player hitting the bag at 1st base. This shot is extremely simple and it comes around to show the game of baseball. The whole movie is filmed revolving the game of baseball, however, it consists of a multitude of hilarious scenes that can bring the attention of the audience away from baseball. This shot focuses specifically on the game of baseball and shows a great ending to such a great film. This shot was also used to draw the attention of an audience as it was used in the preview to draw the attention of people who love baseball or sports in general.
